Becoming Batman

Lately there have been a couple of games where you play as a super hero, and for the most part they've been pretty successful. Infamous, Prototype, even Wolverine were all pretty fun games that expanded the super hero game genre. But there are the big superheroes that everybody wants to be like Superman, or in this case Batman. The last Batman video game that made an impression in my mind was the Batman Returns for the Super Nintendo. That's a long time, I'm sure there have been a lot of Batman games between then and now, let us not forget Lego Batman ( I have a special place in my heart for the Lego games). But never have I felt like I have become Batman more than in Arkham Asylum. I sneak through the darkness and pick villains off with gadgets, i swoop down on people from a perch above, and i'm a master of the sleeper hold. And when i have to go head to head with a group of bad guys, man do I kick ass. Never before have I felt so in control of Batman and his abilities. The gadgets are plentiful and actually very useful. The story is amazing, The Joker takes control of Arkham Asylum and releases all the inmates, and strings Batman along his masterful plan. Of course things don't go as planned for the Joker as he would have like, but hey I'm Batman. Arkham is like a living entity, it's humongous. There is life everywhere, rats run beneath you, bats fly above you, it's so great. They give you tons of back story through secrets found throughout the game, that are organized and hidden by the Riddler. The graphics are beautiful. The fighting in the game is simple button mashing, but it works beautifully with one button for attack and one for counterattack. You feel like you're actually pulling off the amazing moves. Anyone that has ever loved video games, and comic books, this is a game that can not be missed. And I mean Can Not, drop what your playing now, go pick up Batman and play it.

Ponyo

Review-For those of you that don't know Ponyo if a Japanese film by director Hayao Miyazaki. His movies are big in Japan and the last couple ones he's made have made it over to art houses subtitled. Which is how I prefer to watch my Japanese animation. Ponyo this time is getting a full distribution treatment by Disney. It is dubbed, which usually I mind, but Disney does a good job of getting the right actors and probably having high production values. I can definitely say that it is the best dubbed anime I have ever watched. Ponyo is a great family film and I would recommend it for all ages. It's about a 5 year old boy that catches this little fish princess and thinks it's a goldfish. Her father is some sort of sea god and tries to get her back and it's about how she becomes enamored with him and tries to find her way back. Its well done and quite touching. This movie is overflowing with cuteness, not Teletubbie freaky cuteness, but the good kind. I watched it with my 12 year old niece and we both enjoyed it thoroughly. So go check it out.

Time Traveler's Wife

Review-Time Traveler's Wife was a great book. But it had the ability to lose readers because it jumped around it's timeline a lot. But i thought it was great, I've been waiting for this movie ever since I heard Plan B picked it up a couple of years ago. For those of you that don't know that is Brad and Jennifer's production company. So yes this movie has been in limbo a long time. I think they were still together when they acquired the rights to the movie. Anyway the movie is a lot more straightforward than the book. They focus on the constant Time line and travel from there, which makes it easier to follow than the book. It's a little diluted and there are some changes at the end of the movie that were not at the end of the book. I think maybe to make it a little happier, i don't know, that's the new fad don't even get me started about My Sister's Keeper. But overall it was worth watching. Basically Clare Abshire (Rachael McAdams) has spent her whole life waiting for Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana). I liked it, my fiance did not, but I'm sappier than her anyway. She saw it as an anti-feminist statement about how a women is always waiting for a man. Which i guess if you put it that way, it kinda does. Anyway if you liked the book, you'll like the movie. Go check it out.

Inglourious Basterds

Review-Tarentino is known for a lot of things, gore, action, and straight up cool stuff. Basterds seems to move away from that if only in a small way. Instead of the intense action and violence being the center point of this film the the story is the center. And it really is a good pseudo alternate reality kind of story. It's strong, intelligent and really brings you into the other reality. Brad Pitt was hilarious, as the trailers show him to be. The way he talks is a little ridiculous and can be grating at times, but he pulls off a funny character. What is really suprising is how french actress Melanie Laurent completely steals the movie. I have never seen her in anything else, looking her up on imdb it seems she's only done french films. But she is charming, beautiful, and vicious all at the same time. I hope this lauches a career in american cinema for her, because she is amazing. All in all Basterds was a really good movie and it seems to be a step up from Tarentinos normal offensive movie to something dramatically engaging. I'd love to see what he comes up with next.

James Cameron's Avatar teaser trailer has been released. This movie is supposed blow our minds. Supposedly it is the Titanic of sci-fi. So watch it below and let me know what you think.

Public Service Announcement

Texting while driving has been becoming a bigger issue recently. Seems like the British are releasing a very graphic PSA about the dangers of texting. Warning this video is very graphic so please watch at your own risk. Send a very strong message.

New Moon

Speaking of vampires, here is the just released trailer for New Moon, the next part of the Twilight saga. Enjoy!

Another View

There has been a resurgence of the vampire in the public light recently and for a sci-fi fan it's definitely a good thing. I remember hearing about this foreign vampire movie Let the Right One In, sometime last year. I watched it the other day and i just wanted to give my thoughts on it. It's available now on DVD dubbed in English. I would have preferred to watch it subtitled, but whatever. It was definitely a well written movie, it's not your normal horror movie, this movie actually has substance. They probably had a small budget but they had to rely on the story. But there are a couple of cool special effect scenes. The movie is about a little boy who is teased at school and dreams of killing his offenders. A girl moves in next door and she only comes out at night. Her guardian goes out and gets blood for her( who is not a vampire). It's really interesting and worth a watch. I've added the trailer below. Check it out.

Excuse me, what?

Apparently there is a worldwide sensation that I had missed. It's all over youtube and the world is holding it's breath watching the GUMMIBÄR. Yes i said that correctly though here in the states we would call it a Gummy Bear. Apparently this little guy is all over the internet has cds, videos, and a very large following. Here is his famous song I am a Gummy bear.

Looking Ahead

Yesterday I was at the bookstore and I noticed the book The Lovely Bones, It's supposed to be a really good book, though probably really sad. Anyway Peter Jackson bought the rights to it a while ago and the movie is coming out in December. It looks really interesting, it's about a girl who was brutally murdered and can see her family from heaven. It'll probably have really good imagery like What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams. Check out the official webpage. Oh and if you want to read the book, which I might do before the movie comes out it's by Alice Sebold. I've included the trailer below, enjoy!

District 9 Review

Review- Ok, i just got back from watching District 9 and let me tell you I was blown away. Not only was the story amazing. The special effects were amazing, the aliens looked real. How they were able to produce a movie of that magnitude with a budget of $30 million is completely beyond me. G.I. Joe cost $170 million to make and those special effects were horrible. Where does that extra money go? I don't know, but it doesn't make a movie better in any way. I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone so I'll just give a short Synopsis. 20 years ago and alien ship came to earth and floated above Johannesburg, South Africa. It sat there for 3 months before humans decided to break into it and see what was in it. They found a million insectoid aliens, that were malnourished and sick. So they decided to create a temporary camp to house and treat the aliens, District 9. The camp becomes permanent and the story begins with the humans wanting to relocate the "prawns" to somewhere away from the human population. What happens after that needs to be seen. I hope that the make a sequel to the movie, as it kind of sets one up. Anyway go check it out.

District 9

Tomorrow or tonight at midnight if you're crazy like that is the premier of Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jacksons District 9. I have been waiting for this movie for like more than a year and according to Rotten Tomatoes everyone is loving it. Currently standing at a 94% that has got to be one of the highest scores of the summer. Maybe the highest of the summer. I'm going to the first showing tomorrow and will happily share my thoughts on the movie. Also check out the District 9 official website it really interactive and just cool.
